    Education

Primary education in Kenya is subsidised by the government. At the end of the 8 years it takes to complete, the children take the exam to get their KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education). After receiving the KCPE they are ready to start secondary education.

While attending a regular high school is free, boarding schools often require a fee of roughly € 500,-- a year, depending on the school. This often is too expensive for a majority of families and becomes an obstacle that is often far too difficult to overcome, which means that this is the moment education ends for many children.

Even if families have the finances to send their children to a day-school, it is far from an optimal situation. These schools are often very far away, which means that a lot of the day is wasted walking to and from school. Time which could otherwise be used to study. This is made worse by the fact that as soon as these children get home, there are chores to be done, which means even less time can be reserved for schoolwork.

An alternative to these day-schools are boarding schools. These exist in far greater numbers, and are often a better option. The children get meals, a place to sleep, and many more amenities they otherwise would not get at home. This does make for a steeper price, which makes it even more difficult for families to send their children to one of these schools.
